The Pond... Visitors

One of the joys of having a pond is the unusual visitors we get.  Here's an example... Harry the great blue heron.  Harry came to us feeling a little puny; he had black tar in his feathers, in his belly, inside his beak, and coating his legs.  He hung around far too long for the few goldfish that he managed to catch.  Wouldn't leave, just flew up on a power pole nearby.  Eventually he got so weak that he couldn't fly.  We caught him and kept him in the laundry room for a few days, while we stuffed catfish fillets down his neck.  After about a week, he was good as new, and we released him in a wildlife preserve in the Sierra Nevada mountains about 40 miles from our home.

One month later, Harry came back for just one day, to say hi.  We were overjoyed to see that he had survived, knowing that we helped a little.
